First anniversary

The first one is usually just the two of you, or a quiet dinner with both sets of parents. Keep the cake small and personal. A 1 lb cake with both names, or the wedding date written on top, is enough.

If you cannot decide on a flavour, Red Velvet is the safe romantic choice.

Tenth anniversary

By ten years there are usually children at the table, and they will have opinions. This is a good year for a flavour the kids also love, with a message from them on top. "Happy Anniversary Mama Baba" in a child's words means more than any design.

A 2 lb cake works well here. Add a few cupcakes if cousins are coming over.

Twenty-fifth, the silver anniversary

Silver anniversaries in Karachi tend to become a proper dawat, often arranged by the children as a surprise. Think about the guest list before the flavour. Elders, khalas, phuppos and neighbours means you want a familiar cake that everyone eats.

Flavours that suit an anniversary

Red Velvet Cake is the one most couples think of first. The deep red layers and tangy cream cheese frosting look the part, and it is not as heavy as a fudge cake after dinner.

Black Forest Cake is a lovely choice for parents. It was the celebration cake in a lot of Karachi homes in earlier decades, so it brings back memories. It is a fresh cream cake, so keep it refrigerated until cutting.

Strawberry Shortcake is light and pretty, with whipped cream and strawberries, and it suits a small dinner at home. It also needs the fridge.

Chocolate Fudge is for the couple who simply love chocolate. It is also the sturdiest of our cakes in heat, which matters if the cake has to be hidden in a car or a neighbour's house before the surprise.

Vanilla Bean, soft sponge with light buttercream, is the right call for a big mixed family gathering where you want every guest to take a slice.

What to write on the cake

A short name or message is written free on every cake. Shorter is better: three to five words fit neatly on a 1 lb cake, and a little more on bigger sizes.

Two small tips. Type the message in the box on the cake's page exactly as you want it, because Roman Urdu spellings vary from person to person. And if you add names, check the spelling twice. It is the one mistake nobody can fix at the table.

Size: a cake for two or a family dinner

A 1 lb cake for two leaves slices for the next morning with chai. If you are between sizes, think about what else is being served. After a heavy dinner with kheer or other desserts, people take smaller slices.

Custom designs need notice

A regular cake with a written message does not need much planning. A custom design does. Photo-inspired designs, number toppers, special colours and themed cakes all need 2 to 3 days' notice, so get in touch as soon as you know the date.

Planning a surprise

If the cake is a surprise, a few things make it go smoothly:

• Give a delivery address and a phone number of someone who is in on the plan, not the person being surprised.
• Make sure there is fridge space at that address, especially for Black Forest or Strawberry Shortcake.
• Agree the delivery time when we call to confirm the order, so someone is home to receive it.
• If you are picking up yourself, keep the box flat in the car with the AC on.
