How Many Pounds of Cake Do I Need? Guest Count Guide

For most parties in Karachi, plan about 1 pound of cake for every 5 guests. That means 2 pounds for 10 people, 4 pounds for 20, and so on. The number moves a little depending on who is eating and what else is on the table, so use the table below as your starting point and then adjust with the tips that follow.

The quick rule: 1 pound for every 5 guests

Bakers in Karachi sell cake by the pound, so it helps to think in pounds and not in inches or layers. Our serving guide is simple.

• 1 lb serves about 4 to 6 people
• 2 lb serves about 8 to 10 people
• 3 lb serves about 12 to 15 people
• 4 lb serves about 16 to 20 people

The lower number is for generous slices, when cake is the main thing being served. The higher number is for smaller slices, when there is a full dinner, mithai or other desserts as well.

Cake size table for 5 to 50 guests

This table uses the middle of the range, about 5 guests per pound. Prices are at our rate of Rs. 1,500 per pound for any flavour on our cakes page.

Our standard sizes are 1 to 4 pounds. Anything bigger is made on request, so for 25 guests or more please call us first to confirm the size and the date. For large counts, two cakes in two flavours often work better than one very big cake, and the table gives you the total pounds either way.

How slice size changes the numbers

Guest count is only half the answer. The other half is how big each slice will be, and that depends on the kind of gathering.

Kids' birthday parties

Children eat less cake than you expect. They are busy with games, chips and juice, and many leave half a slice on the plate. For a party of mostly children under ten, you can safely use the higher end of the guide, about 6 children per pound.

Do count the adults, though. Mothers, khalas and grandparents who stay for the party will all have a slice with their chai.

A dawat, with cake after dinner

After biryani, kebabs and a proper dessert like kheer, most guests want only a small piece of cake. Here the higher number works again, and you can cut thin slices without anyone minding. A 3 pound cake can comfortably close a dinner for 15.

Tea time and office farewells

When cake is served with chai at 5pm and there is not much else, people take full slices and some come back for a second. Use the lower end of the guide, about 4 people per pound. Mehndi, dholki and big family events

At these events cake is usually one item on a long dessert table. Guests take a taste, not a slice. You can plan fewer pounds than the table suggests and let the mithai and other sweets do the rest.

When to add cupcakes instead of a bigger cake

Sometimes the right answer is not a bigger cake. It is a smaller cake plus cupcakes. This works well when:

• Most guests are children. A cupcake is one clean serving. No knife, no plates, no arguing over who got the bigger piece.
• The party is at school. Teachers can hand out cupcakes in a minute. Cutting and plating a large cake in a classroom is a struggle.
• Guests arrive at different times. At an open house on Eid, a cut cake dries out over the afternoon. Cupcakes stay neat until they are eaten.
• You want two flavours. A Chocolate Fudge cake for cutting and vanilla cupcakes on the side keeps everyone happy.
• You need return gifts. A cupcake to take home is always welcome.

Cost examples at Rs. 1,500 per pound

Here are a few common Karachi situations and what they come to.

Family birthday at home, 8 to 10 people. One 2 pound cake, Rs. 3,000. This order also qualifies for free delivery.

Office farewell, 12 colleagues, cake with chai. One 3 pound cake, Rs. 4,500, delivered free.

Kids' birthday, 15 children and 10 adults. A 3 pound cake for cutting and the adults, Rs. 4,500, plus 15 cupcakes for the children at Rs. 240 to 300 each, which is Rs. 3,600 to 4,500.

Dinner dawat for 20, cake after the meal. One 4 pound cake, Rs. 6,000. With small slices after dinner this is plenty, and you may have some left for breakfast.

Small mistakes that throw off the count

• Counting invited guests, not actual guests. In Karachi, a few extra people always turn up. If you are between two sizes, go up.
• Forgetting the people at home. Family members and house staff who are not on the guest list will still want a piece.
• Cutting slices too big at the start. Ask one person to cut the whole cake in even slices. The first ten plates should not finish the cake.
• Ordering a fresh cream cake for a long outdoor event. Strawberry Shortcake and Black Forest need to stay refrigerated. For a lawn or rooftop in summer, the Chocolate Fudge Cake is the sturdiest choice, and none of it goes to waste.
• Leaving no room in the fridge. A 4 pound cake box is large. Clear a shelf before the rider arrives.
