Dessert Table Ideas for Bridal Showers and Engagements

Plan a dessert table for a bridal shower, engagement, dholki or mehndi at home in Karachi: quantities per guest, colour themes, layout and heat tips.

A good dessert table for a bridal shower, engagement, dholki or mehndi needs one centre cake, three or four kinds of small bakes, a simple colour theme and a plan for the heat. With the right quantities and a bit of layout sense, a dining table or console at home does the job well.

Decide the job of the table first

Before counting cupcakes, decide what the table is for. There are two common situations in Karachi homes.

Dessert after dinner. The dholki or engagement has a full dinner, biryani, BBQ, the works. Guests arrive at the dessert table already full, so they take one or two small things and a sliver of cake. The table is mostly for looks and photos, and quantities can stay modest.

Chai-time event. A bridal shower at 5pm with chai, sandwiches and sweets. Here the dessert table is half the menu, so people eat more from it and you need more per head.

Knowing which one you are hosting stops you from over-ordering.

How much to order: a per-guest checklist

Use this as a starting point and adjust for your family.

  • One centre cake, sized for about half the guests (not everyone takes cake when there are other options)
  • Two to three small pieces per guest if dinner is served
  • Three to four small pieces per guest at a chai-time event
  • At least three different items, so the table looks full and varied
  • Donuts cut in half count as two pieces
  • One extra box kept in the kitchen to refill the table, instead of putting everything out at once

Here is how that works out for a dinner event:

Guests Centre cake Cupcakes Cookies Donuts
20 2 lb 12 12 12
30 3 lb 18 18 18
50 4 lb, or two 2 lb cakes 30 30 24

For a rough budget at our prices, take the 20-guest row. A 2 lb cake is Rs. 3,000. Twelve cupcakes at Rs. 240 to 300 each, twelve cookies at Rs. 280 to 540 and twelve donuts at Rs. 300 to 380 bring the total to somewhere between Rs. 12,800 and Rs. 17,700, depending on which items you pick. For larger functions, our bulk orders page is the place to start.

Build around a centre cake, then add small bites

The centre cake

The cake is the anchor of the table and the thing the bride or the couple cuts for photos. All our cakes are Rs. 1,500 per pound. Red Velvet and Vanilla Bean suit these events well, and Chocolate Fudge is the sturdiest if the table is in a warm room.

A themed cake with the couple's names, a particular colour or a design from a picture is a custom order. It needs 2 to 3 days' notice, and the design price is quoted after we see the picture, which you can email to info@hadiescrust.store. Details are on our custom cakes page.

Cupcakes

Cupcakes are the easiest item for guests because they need no knife and no plate. They also bring colour. The lemon cupcake has yellow frosting, the blueberry kiwi one is sky blue, and the red velvet cupcake carries a raspberry on top.

Cookies

Cookies fill gaps on the table and survive the whole evening without any care. Two of our cookies are made for occasions like this. The Raspberry Linzer Star is a buttery star-shaped sandwich cookie with raspberry jam, and the Love Blush Cookie is pink glazed with tiny hearts.

Donuts

Donuts are the fun item, and younger cousins go for them first. Pink sprinkle donuts suit a bridal shower, and classic glazed ones suit any theme.

Colour themes that work at home

Pick two colours and one neutral. More than that looks messy on a small table.

  • Bridal shower: blush pink, white and a touch of gold. Love Blush cookies, pink sprinkle donuts, vanilla cupcakes, and a white or pale pink cake.
  • Engagement: red, white and green leaves. Red Velvet cake, red velvet cupcakes and Linzer stars with their red jam centres.
  • Mehndi: yellow, green and marigold orange. Lemon cupcakes with yellow frosting sit well next to genda phool. Use brass or steel thaals as trays.
  • Dholki: bright and mixed. This is the one event where a mixed, colourful table looks right. Sprinkle cookies, colourful donuts and a Chocolate Fudge cake for the late-night crowd.

Not everything has to match. If the cake and one other item carry the colour, flowers and napkins can do the rest.

Layout tips for a home table

  • Put the table against a wall. A plain wall, a dupatta backdrop or a string of fairy lights behind it makes photos look better and keeps children from running around it.
  • Create height. Put the cake on a stand in the centre or at the back. Use an upturned bowl under a tray, or stacked books under the tablecloth, to raise one or two platters.
  • Tall at the back, flat at the front. Cake and cupcake stand behind, cookies and donuts on flat plates in front.
  • Leave space. A table with gaps between plates looks cleaner than one packed edge to edge, and guests can reach things.
  • Keep plates, napkins and a cake knife at one end, so the queue moves in one direction.
  • Do not place the table under a fan or in front of a window with afternoon sun. Both dry out and soften the bakes.

Timeline: when to order and set up

When What to do
One week before Fix the guest count, the theme colours and the table spot
3 to 4 days before Place the order on the website, or call us with the list. Custom cakes need 2 to 3 days' notice

Morning of the event Set out the cloth, stands, flowers and empty trays
1 hour before guests Put out cookies and donuts
Just before guests arrive Bring out cupcakes, then the cake last

Keeping things fresh in the heat

Karachi evenings can be warm and humid for much of the year, and load-shedding does not check your event calendar. Plan the table around that.

Keep the cake and cupcakes in the fridge until the last moment. Fresh cream cakes such as Strawberry Shortcake and Black Forest must stay refrigerated, so bring them out only for the cutting. If the room has no AC, choose Chocolate Fudge for the centre cake.

Put out half the small items and refill from the kitchen. Nothing sits out for four hours that way. Cookies are the most forgiving item, so lean on them for an outdoor or rooftop mehndi.

If the power goes, keep the fridge door shut and move the cake cutting earlier instead of later. Our guide on how to store cake in Karachi heat has more on this.
